How Kuwait University GPA Is Calculated on the 4.0 Scale

Kuwait University computes GPA using the same credit-weighted formula as North American universities. Each course contributes to the cumulative GPA in proportion to its credit hours, not just its grade. A 4-credit course has twice the influence on your CGPA as a 2-credit course, even if both carry the same letter grade.

The KU undergraduate grade-point scale runs from 4.00 at the top to 0.00 for failure. A+ and A both earn 4.00 grade points; there is no 4.33 for A+ at KU, unlike some North American institutions that award a fractional bonus. Below A, the scale steps through A- (3.70), B+ (3.33), B (3.00), B- (2.67), C+ (2.33), C (2.00), C- (1.67), D+ (1.33), D (1.00), and F (0.00).

A worked example: a KU College of Science student finishes a semester with the following courses. Physics I (3 credit hours, B+ = 3.33), Calculus II (4 credit hours, A = 4.00), Technical Writing (3 credit hours, B = 3.00), Chemistry Lab (2 credit hours, A- = 3.70), and Introduction to Computer Science (3 credit hours, B+ = 3.33). Quality points: (3.33 x 3) + (4.00 x 4) + (3.00 x 3) + (3.70 x 2) + (3.33 x 3) = 9.99 + 16.00 + 9.00 + 7.40 + 9.99 = 52.38. Total credit hours: 15. Semester GPA = 52.38 / 15 = 3.49. That is one-hundredth of a GPA point below the Distinction threshold.

A second example for a KU College of Business student on a rougher semester: Financial Accounting (3 credit hours, C+ = 2.33), Microeconomics (3 credit hours, B- = 2.67), Marketing Principles (3 credit hours, C = 2.00), Business Statistics (3 credit hours, B = 3.00). Quality points: (2.33 x 3) + (2.67 x 3) + (2.00 x 3) + (3.00 x 3) = 6.99 + 8.01 + 6.00 + 9.00 = 30.00. Total credit hours: 12. Semester GPA = 30.00 / 12 = 2.50. That lands in the Jayyid (Good) classification, above the Maqbul floor at 2.00.

KU Grade Scale: Letter Grades, Percentage Bands, and Arabic Honor Classifications

Kuwait University prints the Arabic honor classification on every official transcript and degree scroll. The classification is determined by cumulative GPA at graduation and appears automatically; students do not apply separately. The five classifications cover the full GPA range from Mumtaz (Distinction) at the top to Rasib (Fail) below the graduation floor.

The Distinction threshold sits at a CGPA of 3.50. A student who earns mostly B+ (3.33) grades will likely graduate with a Jayyid Jiddan classification unless a few strong A- or A courses push the average above 3.50. Given the credit-hour weighting, a single high-credit course with a strong grade can meaningfully shift a borderline CGPA.

Kuwait University Honor Classification Thresholds and What They Mean

The five Arabic classifications map to cumulative GPA ranges that govern both graduation recognition and practical outcomes like scholarship renewal, graduate school eligibility, and government employment scoring in Kuwait.

A KU CGPA below 2.00 at the end of any semester triggers an academic warning. Two consecutive semesters below 2.00 move the student to academic probation with registration restrictions. Qatar University uses a simplified 8-grade scale with no minus grades. A QU B+ is worth 3.50, which is higher than the KU B+ at 3.33. Academic Standing and Probation at Kuwait University

Kuwait University evaluates academic standing at the end of each regular semester. The key thresholds are: good standing at 2.00 and above; academic warning when the CGPA first drops below 2.00; academic probation if the CGPA stays below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters; and dismissal risk at three consecutive semesters below 2.00.

A student on academic warning can take up to 18 credit hours in the following semester (the standard maximum) to recover the average. During probation, registration may be capped at 12 credit hours per semester, which extends the degree timeline. Students who receive an F in a required course must repeat it; KU applies grade replacement for retaken failed courses, where the new grade replaces the original F in the CGPA calculation. A passed course that the student wants to retake for a higher grade requires faculty approval and does not automatically result in grade replacement.

Graduate Grading at Kuwait University: How the Scale Differs

The Kuwait University College of Graduate Studies uses a condensed version of the undergraduate scale. The graduate scale runs from A (4.00) through C (2.00), then skips directly to F (0.00). There is no D+ or D at the graduate level: any score below 60% earns an F. Most graduate courses at KU require a C (2.00) or better to count toward the degree, and many programs set a B (3.00) or higher as the course-level pass threshold.

Graduation requirements at the graduate level are stricter than undergraduate: a master's degree requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, and a graduate diploma requires a minimum of 2.67, per the published KU Graduate Studies regulations. Students enrolled in graduate certificates with shorter credit-hour requirements may face additional caps on the number of C grades permitted in the program. Verify the specific policy with the graduate program coordinator before registering.

An incomplete grade (I) at the graduate level must be resolved before the end of the following semester. If the coursework is not submitted and graded by that deadline, the I automatically converts to an F, which has immediate consequences for graduate standing given the compressed scale. This is one area where graduate students at KU face a tighter timeline than undergraduates.

Major Universities in Kuwait and Their GPA Systems

Kuwait has six significant degree-granting universities, each with a distinct institutional history. Five of the six operate on a 4.0 GPA scale; the sixth uses a percentage-plus-4.0 hybrid.

Using a Kuwait University GPA for International Graduate Applications

A KU cumulative GPA sits on the same 4.0 scale as North American universities, which makes direct comparison straightforward. Credential evaluators like WES do not apply a conversion factor to KU transcripts. A 3.00 KU GPA is evaluated as a 3.00 in the US or Canadian equivalent.

For UK graduate admissions, the broadly accepted equivalence bands are: KU CGPA 3.67 and above corresponds to First Class Honours; 3.33 to 3.66 corresponds to Upper Second Class (2:1); 2.67 to 3.32 corresponds to Lower Second Class (2:2); 2.00 to 2.66 corresponds to Third Class or Pass. European graduate programs that use the ECTS credit framework should know that 1 Kuwait credit hour is approximately equal to 2 ECTS credits, because Kuwait courses follow the US credit convention of approximately 15 contact hours per credit. A 120-credit KU bachelor's degree is broadly equivalent to a 240-ECTS European degree. If a European application asks for an ECTS-weighted GPA, the credit count changes but the grade-point calculation method stays the same. Semester GPA vs. Cumulative GPA at Kuwait University

Kuwait University reports two separate GPA figures at the end of every semester. The semester GPA reflects only the courses taken in that specific term. The cumulative GPA (CGPA) covers every graded course since enrollment, using the total quality points and total credit hours across the full transcript.

Academic probation uses the cumulative GPA. Dean's recognition and honor classification thresholds also use the cumulative GPA. The semester GPA is useful for tracking recent performance, but it is the cumulative figure that governs graduation, probation, and scholarship eligibility. A strong semester GPA (for example, 3.70 this semester) will improve the cumulative GPA, but the size of the improvement depends on how many total credit hours are already in the denominator.

Special Grade Codes at Kuwait University: W, I, P, and NP

Several grade codes appear on KU transcripts without contributing to the CGPA. Knowing what each means prevents confusion when the GPA does not shift after a semester that included one of these courses.

W (Withdrawal) is assigned when a student officially drops a course after the add/drop deadline but within the withdrawal period. A W carries no grade points and no credit hours in the GPA formula. It appears on the transcript as a permanent record but does not count as a failed attempt. KU colleges set a maximum on the total number of W grades permitted per program, and exceeding that limit requires dean approval.

I (Incomplete) is given when documented extenuating circumstances prevent the student from finishing a course. An incomplete must be resolved within the timeframe specified by the faculty; if unresolved, it converts to an F. Until cleared, an I contributes no grade points and no credit hours to the running CGPA.

P (Pass) and NP (Not Passed) appear on courses offered under a pass/fail option. A P earns credit hours toward graduation but 0.00 grade points, so it does not raise or lower the GPA. An NP earns neither. TC (Transfer Credit) marks coursework accepted from another institution; TC entries appear on the transcript but are excluded from the KU cumulative GPA, which is calculated using only grades earned at KU.
